Student International Travel: Coronavirus & Passports

Message

1/10/22

Student international travel for university related purposes remains restricted. However, thanks to health and safety measures implemented by travel and program providers and individual nations, expanded access to COVID-19 vaccines and boosters, and careful student planning, the University is allowing a number of students to travel abroad for university related purposes. All student international travel, including travel by graduate students and GME residents and fellows, is subject to the University Policy on Student International Travel and will continue through spring 2022 to require a favorable review of local health, safety, and security conditions and individual student plans. See the COVID Considerations page for more information.

The University continues to monitor information on Omicron, regional outbreaks of COVID, and possible restrictions on travel. Travelers should confirm entry requirements for their destination before their departure date and make sure they have the most up-to-date requirements for re-entering the U.S.  Entry and exit requirements can change quickly.

All students traveling internationally are subject to UVA's COVID-19 vaccination booster shot requirement. Travelers should not expect to have access to boosters abroad, and many countries have or are expected to adjust their vaccine requirements to include a booster. See the CDC booster guidance and COVID Considerations for more information.

Passport processing times remain delayed.  If you are a US citizen interested in participating in education abroad in 2022, apply for your passport now. See UVA Programs for more details, and the State Department for details and to apply.
