For students in the College, an international experience can be an integral component to the discipline. Upon return from studying abroad, many students report that they are equipped with greater language proficiency, deeper knowledge and understanding of various cultures, as well as a broader, more global perspective that is often valued by employers.

Academic & Timing Considerations

Depending on the program you enroll in, you may receive either direct or transfer credit for the courses you complete abroad. All students wishing to study abroad must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, depending on the program. Planning ahead is key to finding a program that meets your academic and personal goals. The International Studies Office recommends planning for your international experience as early as first year and encourages you to meet with an education abroad advisor, as well as your academic advisor.

There are a wide variety of opportunities abroad offered through UVA for the semester, year and summer, as well as internship and/or research opportunities.

Academic & Timing Considerations

Other than AMST 2001, AMST 3001, and AMST 4500 (4th year seminar), students may take classes abroad to fulfill 6 credits of Major electives within their chosen concentration. Courses students wish to count towards the American Studies Major must be pre-approved by the Director of Undergraduate Programs on a case-by-case basis. The American Studies Department and the International Studies Office recommend planning for your international experience as early as possible, and encourage you to meet with an education abroad advisor, as well as your academic advisor.

Planning ahead is key to finding a program that meets your academic and personal goals. Up to six credits from abroad may be counted toward the anthropology major. The department will allow one course (three credits)  to be counted toward the anthropology minor. To obtain course approvals for major or minor credit, you need to meet with the director of undergraduate studies in anthropology prior to committing to a program.

For students in Archaeology, an international experience can be an integral component to the discipline. You are able to develop professional skills in a multicultural setting, as well as deepen your knowledge of other countries and cultures. This can better prepare you to interact with people from backgrounds different from you own. International experience and a global perspective are often valued by employers.

Study Abroad Programs

These are credit-bearing study abroad programs from the UVA approved programs list offering coursework in archaeology; classes may or may not have a field component. Students apply to the program and to UVA for approval to participate (including transfer credit approval).

Field Schools

Archaeology field schools offer academic credit for their coursework. Students apply to the program and to UVA for approval to participate (including transfer credit approval). Examples are available on the Archaeology department's website. Because these programs are not on UVA's approved programs list, students will submit a petition application for approval; contact Assistant Director for Education Abroad Margaret Walter for information about next steps.

Fieldwork

Fieldwork that does not offer academic credit is a different category. Fieldwork completed internationally is still considered University-related if it completes a major/minor requirement or otherwise advances completion of a degree program, and/or utilizes University resources. Examples are available on the Archaeology department's website. Students pursuing fieldwork for University-related purposes must complete a Travel Registration.

Previous Chemistry students have found the fall of third year as the best term to study abroad. The spring of second year may be an option for some students. Summer and January term programs are also available. Remember that courses must be preapproved by the DUP to fulfill CHEM major requirements.

It can deepen your appreciation of the power of literature in a broader, global perspective while extending your language proficiency. After studying abroad, many students report a sense of transformation in their relationship to the discipline and cite their international experience as one of the most valuable parts of their undergraduate years.

• The department gives a maximum of 6 credit hours for courses taken outside the UVA English department, whether in another UVA department or through a study abroad program.
• The department does not give transfer credit for summer study abroad.
• To count for major credit, courses taken abroad must be advanced, semester-long courses involving substantial amounts of reading and 10-15 pages of formal writing. When contacting the department for pre-approval, students should include detailed course descriptions specifying requirements. Courses in which assessment is based solely on exams and/or short response papers do not qualify.
• Based on course descriptions, the English DUP will grant pre-approval. They also, however, require post-approval on the student's return, at which time they syllabi and papers written must be presented.

Benefits of an International Experience

The Environmental Sciences department views international education as an integral component to its students’ education. Students must be prepared to embrace both the challenges and the exciting opportunities of our global community and to be enriched by programs that involve them with the people, cultures, and environment of our neighbors worldwide. There are a wide variety of opportunities offered to EVSC students; they can integrate a semester, year, or short-term program into their academic plan, earning both major credit or general elective credit towards their UVA degree.

The Department hopes that majors will take courses in Environmental Sciences beyond the number which are required, and that students will take advantage of course offerings abroad to enhance and expand upon the courses offered by the Department on grounds. The Department will allow up to six transfer credits earned abroad to be transferred towards major requirements. Direct credit courses are exempted from the six credit limit. Courses for major credit must be pre-approved by the Director of Undergraduate Programs of Environmental Sciences.

Benefits of an International Experience

Whether you’re considering a major or minor in French or want to improve your French skills while studying another subject, you are probably aware of the importance of education abroad to your field. As a student working towards language acquisition, spending time abroad in an immersion setting is crucial to developing proficiency and confidence in speaking that cannot be matched elsewhere. In addition to honing your language skills, time in a French-speaking country will allow you to gain greater cultural understanding and a more nuanced perspective on both your host culture and home country.

Up to twelve credits toward the French major may be earned in approved foreign study programs, and up to six credits may be earned toward a French minor. Benefits of an International Experience

How societies approach and deal with development varies greatly around the globe and there is a lot to learn from exploring these different approaches. By studying abroad, Global Development Studies majors will have the opportunity to gain a wider perspective on the current global struggles and successes with development policy and practice. Many programs offer the opportunity to conduct field research or participate in an internship which allows students to gain practical experience outside of the classroom and expand their professional network. International education should be an integral component of your education to prepare you for our global community.

Global development studies students are encouraged to study abroad in the second semester of their third year. Elective course requirements can be fulfilled abroad. Students should select their program and courses in consultation with a GDS faculty advisor, who will help the student put together coursework which will culminate in a research paper for GDS 4991. GDS majors have to complete one language course beyond the 2020 level which is easily accomplished during a semester abroad.

Benefits of an International Experience

By studying abroad, Global Studies - Middle East and South Asia majors will have the opportunity to gain in-depth experience with the history, culture, language, and politics of the Middle East (ME) and South Asia (SA), as well as large-scale issues that face our globalizing world. A natural extension of the GSMS major, study abroad afford students the opportunity to engage with multiple world-views that may redefine how we understand what is global and how we should think about what are they key questions and challenges.

Academic & Timing Considerations

Global Studies Middle East and South Asia (GSMS) students are encouraged to study abroad in the second semester of their third year (in some cases, first semester of their fourth year may also be possible with special approval from the College). Regional and Global elective course requirements and language course requirements can be fulfilled abroad. Students should select their program and courses in consultation with the GSMS faculty advisor, who will help the student put together coursework which may culminate in a research paper for GSMS 4991. A maximum of 12 study abroad and domestic transfer credits are allowed, with the permission of the major advisor. Students are encouraged to think broadly about programs in the Middle East and South Asia, and programs situated elsewhere (eg. Europe) that address ME-SA regional or global issues.

Benefits of an International Experience

Health professional admissions committees have expressed the opinion that study abroad offers students an opportunity to broaden their undergraduate experience, especially by developing a student’s maturity and cultural awareness. 

There are numerous education abroad programs that offer a tailored curriculum to the health fields, as well as the chance for practical experience, such as clinical observations and hospital visits that will augment your understanding of an-other country’s healthcare system as well as your own country’s system.

Academic & Timing Considerations

Planning ahead is key to identifying a study abroad program that meets your goals as a pre-health student, particularly if you want to participate in a semester-long program. Students are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to study and engage in service opportunities or clinical environments in foreign cultures. When planning your coursework abroad, Pre-Health Advisors do NOT recommend taking your pre-health pre-requisite courses unless they are for direct UVA credit. However, you are encouraged to take non pre-requisite science or non-science coursework that will broaden your knowledge and skill set. Additionally, while there are circumstances when science pre-requisite coursework during the summer can be justified, Pre-Health Advisors most commonly discourage taking science pre-requisite coursework during the summer if you plan to study abroad during the academic year. Students on the Pre-Health track are encouraged to connect with a Pre-Health Advisor as part of their planning process.

Benefits of an International Experience

For students in sociology, an international experience can add deeper insight to the discipline and their studies at UVA. Studying abroad exposes sociology students to new perspectives and ideas, allowing you to be better equipped in research and applying theory. There are a wide variety of opportunities available for coursework abroad in sociology. Students can integrate a semester, year, or short-term program into their academic plan, earning both major credit or general elective credit towards their UVA degree.

Academic & Timing Considerations

For the major, the Sociology Department will allow up to six credits earned abroad to transfer towards requirements. Students seeking approval for major credit must meet with the Director of Undergraduate Programs of Sociology on a case-by-case basis. Please note that the courses which are considered for transfer cannot be substituted for SOC 3020, 3120, or 4000 level courses. To ensure a well-integrated study abroad experience, the Sociology department and the International Studies Office recommends planning early in your academic career.

All three tracks (General, Literature & Culture and Linguistics & Philology) of the Spanish major include three core courses, a grammar course (3010 or 4010, depending upon departmental placement), Texts & Interpretation (SPAN 3300), and at least one survey course (SPAN 3400-3430). In order to count for the major or minor, these courses must be taken at UVa or in a program recommended, not merely approved (see above), by the Spanish Department.
