Student International Travel Considerations

  • Entry Requirement for the United Kingdom: Travelers from the U.S. and most other countries are now required to have a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter and in some cases transit through the UK. Apply for the ETA online or through the UK ETA app. While approvals are predicted to be within three days or faster, students are advised to apply at least three weeks in advance of planned travel in case of processing delays. Visit the GOV.UK page on applying for a UK ETA to learn more.

Program Development

Program Development

The Education Abroad team collaborates with faculty and staff to increase student mobility. Together we develop and administer study abroad programs in a variety of disciplines, identify opportunities that align with and complement degree programs and raise student awareness about the many options they have to enhance their education abroad.

Career Readiness

Education Abroad programs can provide opportunities for students to learn about and develop critically important skills and competencies for the workplace. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified eight career readiness competencies, with corresponding sample behaviors. To help students think proactively about how their experience abroad can support their career readiness, the program brochure for each UVA program will list three relevant career competencies and associated sample behaviors which may be developed and practiced whilst students are abroad on this program.

Review the Education Abroad & Career Readiness page on the Education Abroad website and the NACE competencies and sample behaviors for more information. During the program development phase, faculty program directors will be asked to identify the top three NACE sample behaviors they believe engaged participants on their program will have the opportunity to practice.
